Osian Desert Temples

Osian is a remarkable archaeological site 65 kilometres north of Jodhpur: a cluster of 16 Brahmanical and Jain temples built between the 8th and 12th centuries, set against the Thar Desert. The temples are richly carved in a style that predates the more famous Khajuraho temples by a century.

The site is still an active place of worship — the Sachiya Mata temple draws pilgrims from across Rajasthan — making it a living heritage site rather than a preserved ruin. The surrounding desert landscape, with sand dunes visible on the horizon, makes for striking photography at any time of year.

Osian is consistently undervisited relative to its significance. The temple complexes are largely tourist-free, the carvings are in excellent condition, and the scale of the site — spread across a large area of desert scrubland — gives a sense of the town's medieval importance as a trading hub on the route between Rajasthan and Sindh.
