Mehndi

Mehndi — the art of henna — is woven into every celebration in Rajasthan. The paste, ground from dried henna leaves, is piped into intricate patterns on the hands and feet, deepening over hours into a rich russet stain that lasts one to two weeks. In Marwari tradition, the darker the stain, the stronger the blessing.

The haveli arranges sessions with a mehndi artist from the old city whose family has practised the craft for generations. The patterns are distinctly Rajasthani — peacocks, paisleys, latticework echoing the carved jharokha windows of the haveli itself — applied freehand, without stencils, at a speed that has to be watched to be believed.

A session can be as simple as a single-hand motif done in half an hour over chai in the courtyard, or as elaborate as full bridal mehndi spanning hands and feet. It pairs naturally with the Kalbelia folk evening — mehndi drying by lamplight while the dancers perform is about as Rajasthani as an evening gets.

What to Expect
